On Tuesday, February 23, 2016, Rotary Clubs all across the world celebrated the 111th Anniversary of Rotary International. Started by Paul P. Harris in 1905, Rotary has grown to well over 33,000 clubs throughout the world. Below are a few facts about the history of Rotary.
- The name Rotary originated due to the fact that each meeting would rotate to different locations.
- In 1910, Rotarians held their first convention in Chicago. 16 clubs gathered together and formed the National Association of Rotary Clubs.
- However, in 1912, they decided to change the name to International Association of Rotary Clubs due the additions of clubs from other countries. It wasn’t until 1922 that the name Rotary International was officially adopted.
- Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor created the Four-Way Test in 1932.
- In 1987 U.S. Supreme Court ruled that all male service organization must accept women as members.
- Interact is Rotary International’s service club for students between the ages of 12 to 18.
- Rotaract is a service club for young adults between the ages of 12 to 30. Rotaract clubs are community or university based and sponsored by a Rotary Club.
- Since the first project in 1979, Rotary and their partners have helped to reduce Polio by 99.9 percent of cases worldwide.
Still looking to cook up some fun with District 6600?
It is with great excitement that District 6600 has decided to put together a book celebrating health and wellness. The book will be a compilation of recipes, stories and experiences of Rotarians throughout the district. The book will be titled “Rotatouille! Healthy Eating and Happy Giving” and will possibly available for sale by July, with proceeds benefiting The Rotary Foundation.
If you are interested in submitting a recipe and story, a submission form can be found here. Submission forms can be emailed to Mary Pietras at mary.pietras@beyondbasicshc.com or mailed to her at 3130 Central Park West, Toledo, OH 43617. Additionally, Rotarians can opt to submit their recipes online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/3MWL99J. Pictures should be included with the submissions, when possible, to bring even more appeal to the recipes. The last day to submit recipes is April 1.
Updates from the Friday, February 19th meeting
Our fine master for the week was Doug Sosko. Doug was kind enough to bring his mom along to the meeting and gave us a vocational on how he became a CPA with CliftonLarsonAllen LLP. After a very beautiful talk about how his mom has been a huge impact on his life and career, Doug gave us a very informative quiz on tax laws.
Our guest speaker for the week was Mayor Michael Olmstead. Mayor Olmstead gave his annual State of the City speech where he spoke to the club on the latest developments and news from the City of Perrysburg.
Join us this coming Friday where our guest speaker will be Deb Mauk (Perrysburg Bicentennial)
and we will be celebrating Rotary International’s 111 th Anniversary.
