Welcome back to the Carranor for this Friday’s meeting. After a successful auction, we get the chance to get back to normal – at least for a little while before tackling our next club project this spring. Read below for an update from Auction Chair Rick Thielen. We can’t thank him and his team enough but it would be great if you’d try!
We have a great program coming up on Friday. College of Business students experience one of the most unique and innovative business programs in the country. Students graduate with real-world knowledge of the global marketplace through interactive learning programs and internships making graduates highly marketable to recruiters across the country. We’ll hear from Dean Ray Braun about the school. Following a 10 year career as associate and partner at Shumaker, Loop, and Kendrick and a 16-year career at Health Care REIT, he took the helm of the business school in 2012.
Dean Braun will introduce Kirk Kern, director of the Dallas-Hamilton Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership in the College of Business at Bowling Green State University, recognized as Northwest Ohio's premier resource for entrepreneurial education. Kirk will discuss a fascinating program that is reminiscent of “The Shark Tank.”
TheFalcon Hatchery in the Dallas-Hamilton Center accepts applications each fall from all current BGSU undergraduate students to launch new business ventures as part of the event called "The Hatch." If your application is accepted, you will be paired with an alumni mentor and will prepare a presentation of your business idea to alumni investors.
Students have the unique opportunity to launch a business with the assistance of a business start-up program called "The Hatch." If selected as a Hatchling through an application process, students work on a business presentation with an alumni mentor for ten weeks. The aspiring entrepreneurs then face a panel of investors, along with a live audience, and pitch their ideas in hopes of obtaining funding to “hatch” their venture, similar to the television show "Shark Tank."

Well, we did it! We were able to Light the Night...Light Up Rotary!
I want to take this opportunity to thank our Sponsors, our performers, our bidders, the Explorer and Interact students, all of my fellow Rotarians and of course our guests for making last Saturday night a completely enjoyable and successful 31st Annual Auction! Also, thank you for your continued commitment to Rotary to those who donated the many Live and Silent Auction offerings and for the very generous cash donations. It was an awesome time and I think everyone enjoyed themselves immensely (I know the people who expressed that to me were quite sincere).
We are still compiling the final numbers, but I know in the end, we will have done good. Rest assured that we did build good will and better friendships and it was most certainly beneficial to all concerned!
For those of you who came out Saturday morning to help setup, thank you for your time and effort. It was very much appreciated and as the saying goes, many hands...!
I want to thank my committee for an amazing job well done. Bob Venzel, Jeff Normand, Cindy Russeau, Laura Dosch, Wayne Koskinen, Jeri Wendt, Joanie Asendorf, Charlie Davies, John Wlodarski, Less Domini, Mary McConnell, Julie Kerr, Ellie McManus, Susan Nelson, Janel Haas and Helene Zielinski. It was a privilege and honor, not to mention a delight, to have been able to work with such a dedicated and energetic group of fellow Rotarians. This team went far and beyond "Service Above Self". However, I must recognize three individuals for whom the Auction would simply not happen without their continued commitment (mostly behind the scenes) and tireless involvement: Alison Frye, Ken Robinson and Matt Matuga. THANK YOU ALL!
Finally, I want to thank Jon Ahlberg and the Club Board for this opportunity to Chair the Auction. It was actually a pretty fun experience and certainly a unique opportunity to be able to make a difference and to serve Rotary. I sincerely believe that it only takes one person to light a candle, then another, and another, until there is enough light to light up the world.
We all did just that, we did Light the Night...Light Up Rotary!

Mike McGivern of McGivern Jewelers in Perrysburg has been proposed for membership in our club by Jeff Schaller and approved by our club board on February 11. Mike would be given the classification of Jewelry Retailer. Any member who wishes to file an objection must do so in writing in care of the club secretary by Friday, February 20 at noon. Barring an objection, Mike will be considered admitted to membership and will be inducted upon completion of new member orientation and payment of dues.
It's easy to get your project funded by our local foundation! President Jon, who sponsored a grant this told the club this fall that it was the easiest grant his beneficiary had completed. What's holding you back?
Please think about agencies that matter to you and grants that you might be able to sponsor. Surely you can spare 15 minutes to help that program finish a grant to submit to the club board...
