We had another fantastic week at Rotary! After finishing up our very successful Annual Charity Auction, we gathered at the
Way Public Library for our second Rotary on the Road meeting.
We kicked off the meeting by welcoming our fellow members and guests to the café area at the l
ibrary. We were invited to enjoy an afternoon meeting of fellowship amongst the beautiful glass windows and just outside the quiet room. Our first order of business was to do our weekly raffle draw for a bottle of wine and for a chance at the Queen of Hearts. If you had been following along in the past few weeks, you are probably well aware that the deck had dwindled down to just a handful of cards. At this particular meeting, we were finally down to two cards, an Ace of Diamonds and the Queen of Hearts. Past President Jon Ahlberg had the winning ticket for the Queen of Hearts draw but was sadly disappointed when he drew the Ace of Diamonds. The Queen of Hearts will be placed into a new deck of cards and we will all anxiously wait for the next winner!
Next, Rick Thielen stepped up to the podium to give a brief but very thoughtful message about the auction. Rick was very proud to announce that we had surpassed several of our goals for the auction and that the Gifts from the Heart event was a huge success. As always, we cannot express how thankful we are to Rick Thielen (Auction Chair), the Auction Committee and all the members who participated in making the evening of the auction such a success!
To continue on with our joyous afternoon at the library, Jonathan Smith gave us little background on his career at
Smith Bonds and Surety and his journey to winning a seat on the Perrysburg City Council. In addition to a brief vocational, Jonathan shared with us some very exciting new. He and his wife Amanda will be welcoming a new baby this year! Jonathan, Amanda and Big Sister Lucy have a lot to celebrate in 2016! After sharing such wonderful news with the club, Jonathan gave us a pop quiz on the Past U.S. Presidents in honor of President’s Day.
As we moved our way through the meeting, Janel Haas, our hostess for the afternoon, engaged us in a wonderful talk about the Way Public Library and the many wonderful services that are offered. As many of us are aware, the Perrysburg Rotary Club has graciously donated funds to help rehab a specific area in the library and turn it into a much needed quiet room. The room is designed to be a closed off area, separate from the hustle and bustle of the busy library atmosphere, where patrons are welcome to come and focus on tasks that require a more quiet environment. The quiet room is situated just off the café area and features several cubicle style desks, a few lounge chairs and a beautiful fire place. Completely closed off from the rest of the library, patrons are sure to find this space very welcoming and calming for their tasks at hand.
After reviewing several of the services that the library has to offer, Janel spoke more on the digital services offered through the library. Currently, the Way Public Library is connected to a service called OverDrive.
OverDrive is an online library database that allows patrons to digitally borrow ebooks, audio books, and videos. Another digital platform is Hoopla.
Hoopla offers similar digital downloads as Overdrive but is currently hosting a larger selection of digital movie and music streaming options. If you are interested in more information on the digital services or any services offered at the Way Public Library, please stop by the reference desk and they will be more than happy to help with all your questions.
Be sure to join this Friday as we head back to the Carranor where our guest speaker will be Mayor Michael Olmstead.
Happy Anniversary Rotary!
This coming Tuesday, February 23rd, Rotaries all around the world will be celebrating the 111th Rotary Anniversary. Below are a few ideas on how to help Rotary celebrate this wonderful event!
- Host a celebration party at your next club meeting.
- Inform your social media followers on 23 February that it’s Rotary’s anniversary by changing your Facebook cover photo to a birthday cake.
- Encourage club members to bring a friend to your next meeting or to hear your next guest speaker.
- Plan a project and invite community members to volunteer their help.
- Sponsor a local event and use the opportunity to tell people about Rotary and about the work your club is doing in the community.
