Meeting News 1.23.15

We've got one of our special meetings on deck for this Friday.  For the past several years, we have had the chance to see the students that participate in the Perrysburg Law and Government Explorer Post's Mock Trial Team.  Judge Osterud created the explorer post several years ago.  Some might recall that former member Adam Nowland was in the first year's group and he is now a practicing attorney - just to give you some context.  Dwight's leadership is an example of how one person can start something very special.  Earlier this month we got to see evidence of the same thing with Walt Celley and our STRIVE Program.  While the Mock Trial team isn't a Rotary sponsored program, it has had a relationship with our club through the post's help at our annual auction.  On Friday, we will hear part of a direct and and cross examination along with an opening and closing statement from members of one of the three teams the explorer post will field in competition next week.  It's a fun experience for attorneys and non-attorneys alike.  And before we make any lawyer jokes, know that most of these students do not become lawyers but do become confident speakers and critical thinkers and credit this experience for supporting that.

 

We'll also receive auction updates, participate in a quick membership prospecting exercise, and enjoy some great Rotary Fellowship.  One other heads up.  Make a note for Gary Arthur's annual presentation on his experience as an NFL Official on January 30.  This will be a another great opportunity to bring a prospective member to a program that we look forward to each year so get your ask in gear!

 

Lastly, thank you for your outpouring of support this weekend to Steve Hopkins' family.  The Rotary presence at Steve's funeral and the lunch that followed was truly moving.  Steve's Memorial Fund has raised more than $2,000 so far.  If you would like to contribute, please go online from the link in the story that follows in this week's bulletin or give a check payable to PRSF with Steve in the memo line to Ken Robinson or to the sergeant's table.
